My father set up A.R. Twigg & son in Leeds in 1956 after he had worked many years as a salesman in the funeral trade. In the beginning he was supplying the trade and engraving coffin plates. When I joined the business in1959 we started to make our own wood coffin handles at our factory in leeds as cremation was becoming more widespread.we also started to make coffin biers.
In the 1970s we started to make plastic coffin handles.
Later when the Leeds factory was demolished we closed the woodworking and moved the plastics and engineering to Calverley. When the engineering got busier we sold the plastics to John Wilde & Co in Birmingham .
Now we supply biers, lifting gear and storage systems to funeral directors,hospitals and crematoria.
We supply nationwide and to the Irish Republic. We have also exported to other countries including Hong Kong, South Africa , Australia and Holland among others.
